  • Old Overhead Door Opener

We live in an old home that came with two Overhead Door brand garage door openers -- built like tanks. Don't know the model or age, but they are old enough to NOT have sensors of any kind! One works well. The other opens fine, but only closes if I hold the wall button. It stops if I release the button, and it doesn't go down with the remote at all. Most repair sites identify sensors as the likely problem, but as I said, there are no sensors. Door travel is set by mechanical switches tripped by levers on a threaded bar; they appear to function fine. Any thoughts? These are practically antique, and I'd like to keep them if they are at all repairable.

No luck yet. I trimmed and reconnected the receiver wires, but cannot identify anything as a "down force" reset switch. I did find the model number: R80Z. I think its from the late 60s or early 70s.

A bad down limit switch could do that also, good call mr tjr.

The down force should be a screw with a spring on under the cover.

try switching the Tranciever from the one opening with a remote to the one that the remote that don't work to see it is bad..

            Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing seems to work yet. I think I may have a bad relay switch (possible?).

When I come out and people has an old opener like that it mostly done and need replacement, then no time to any trouble shooting. It's very rare that we see the old Overhead opener you have, but this don't help you.
First I don't think it has any too do with your remotes, the remote only send a very short signal, but when you press and hold the wall button(closing the circuit ) it will go down, as some blocking the safety sensor(you don't have). If the force setting was wacked out, again (on most opener) it will not help holding the push button. Some tells the opener not to close, it might be simple, but nothing I can picture in my head right now.
Might be time for a Chamberlain product.
