garage door opener issues

Hi , I am currently using my shed as a "man cave" I have a 7 ft tall garage door, I installed a garage door opener, but I installed the opener rail 10 inches above the door so the motor was up and out of the way instead of the recommended 2 inches, it lasted about 2 years and unfortunately the motor buckled my door beyond repair. my question is can I extend the door rails leaving the motor where it is or is my only option to lower it to the recommended height?

That will be doable, but it might throw off the balance of the door. If it is a plain jane door, I don't see it as a big problem.
