I currently have 2 8x7 garage doors , I am changing it to a 16x7 door ,and need to replace the header . I was curious to see if I can use 2 2x10's or do I have to use 2 2x12's for a 16 foot span.

does the header carry any weight? other than the roof? -
There are living quarters above th garage , it has a gable end roof .Comment

what's the width of the existing header? if it's 10 then use a 16 ft 10. all the weight is to be supported at the ends with no middle support. what about an engineered header? 16 ft is a long distance without a center support.Comment
