    Hi all
What of fertilizer should I mix with grass seed before sowing?

The fertilizer to use is called Starter Fertilizer. It usually has this printed on the label. I know Scott's has this stated on its bag since I just recently purchased some.

Here is an old trick that will help stimulate germination of your grass seed. Place the seed in your freezer for about 4 to 5 days before sowing.

The freezing simulates the wintering over of seed and aids in cracking the hull of the seeds to permit moisture to enter and begin the germination process.

I first learned of this from my grandfather when i was a kid on the farm, but recently I read a report on the Ohio State University Agricultural Extension service that confirms it works.

is there any benefit to applying a layer of peat moss after i seed. Allow the water to sit better?

I don't see any good in using peat moss other than enriching the soil or breaking up hard soils into a workable mixture. my dad always used to put peat moss on our lawn every spring - I don't know why - I only see it as a ground cover in flowering beds. Bark mulch does the same thing but you wouldn't use this on your lawn.
