It's easy to forget that appliances we use to clean things also need cleaning themselves. Regular cleaning maintains the quality of the machine and improves the performance of the machine as well. All you will need for this is white vinegar (or bleach if you're not opposed to using it in your home cleaning), baking soda, a tooth brush, and a microfiber cloth.
Step 1. Fill the washer by starting the highest load size, hottest water setting, and longest wash time.
Step 2. As the tub fills, add a quart of white vinegar (or bleach).
Step 3. Add a cup of baking soda. Close the lid and let the washer agitate for about a minute and a half or two minutes. Open the lid and allow the water/vinegar/baking soda mixture to soak for about an hour.
Step 4. In the meantime, remove any parts that can be removed. Soak and scrub the removable parts like the bleach and fabric softener wells. Clean the upper portion of the agitator and the hard to read areas under the lid. You can even clean the front and sides if you're feeling frisky.
Step 5. After an hour close the lid and let the cycle finish.
Step 6. Run another hot wash with a quart of vinegar to get rid of any residue left by the first wash.
Step 7. Once the washer has drained, use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the sides of the machine to remove any last residue.
And voila, you have a nice, clean washing machine. Be sure to repeat this process at least once every three months to ensure the cleanest clothes and to maintain the integrity of your washing machine.
