We've talked about protecting your home from criminals and intruders, but we also need to touch on protecting your home against more natural predators, like inclement weather. Even if you do not live in "tornado alley," you still run the risk of strong storms and, yes, even tornadoes. If you're planning on building your own home or remodeling any time soon, be sure to keep these safety measures in mind:

1. If you're building a home, make sue that the structure at least meets, even better if it exceeds, the current building code. This is even more important if you're planning on living in a high-risk area.

2. If you're buying a home, pay particular attention to windows, doors, and roofs during the inspection. These are typically weaker areas of your home and if they are not solidly built and installed, they will provide little protection from the elements.

Here are some other measures that can be taken to ensure the safety of you, your family, and your home:
- Install impact-resistant window systems. These have a much better chance of withstanding strong winds. If you can't find them in a store, you can order online.
- Make sure doors entry doors have at least three hinges as well as a deadbolt. This helps reinforce the strength.
- Avoid sliding glass doors on patios or decks. They are probably the weakest door available and won't do much in the way of protection.
- Have a safety kit prepared for when inclement weather threatens to make an appearance. Include water, non perishable goods, any medication taken daily, flash lights, batteries, a weather radio, and blankets at the very least.
- Always be aware of what exactly your home insurance policy covers, and make sure you have enough coverage to take care of any amount of damage.
