This weekend I had a major accident. I spilled nail polish remover on one of my wooden side tables at home. Needless to say, it completely took off the finish on the surface of the table and left an ugly white stain. I was devastated.
After a few minutes of panic, I consulted the Internet to see if there were any ways to remove the stain. I didn't want to just get rid of the table, because it's still a great side table! There were a lot of different methods, and some really weird ones. I thought I'd share what I found in case anyone else has a blunder like I did this weekend!
The easiest fix I found required four things: mayonnaise, ashes, cloth, and an iron. Yes, you read that right! Here's what you do:
1. Rub 3 to 4 tablespoons of mayo onto the stain. Sprinkle ashes over the mayonnaise and let sit for 5 minutes. Then gently rub the mayo and ashes into the stain with the cloth to remove it. Wash off the mixture with a damp cloth. (You can get ashes from several matches. Just light them. let burn for a few seconds, then mash them up to get ashes.)
2. Wet a cloth and add a dab or two of mild soap, then wipe down the table. Rinse the table and let dry well. Pout 3 to 4 tablespoons of wood oil onto the stain and rub it in. Let the stain sit for 5 to 10 minutes Wash and rinse the table with the soapy cloth again.
3. Dampen another cloth and set over the stain. Put the iron on high heat and rub over the cloth in a circular motion. Check under the cloth to see if the stain is fading. dampen the cloth again if needed. Dont let the iron sit on the table too long or it will burn it. Then you will have a whole different problem!
Hopefully this helps with stripped wood finishes. If not, you can always refinish the table!

use a water based urethane to refinish the table. acetone won't react to urethane.
