  • Tapered gap between door frames

I am having a house built and noticed that the wall space between the two door frames of two of the bedrooms that are side by side tapers off. The wall space between the top of the doors is about 9 inches wide and is about 7 inches wide at the bottom. I was wanting to know if this is simply a minor cosmetic issue or a major structural issue and what action to take to have this fixed. Any info provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You stated that this is during construction so the question that comes to me is what are you actully measuring? If you are measuring the studs their seems to be problem, however, if you are measuring the sheetrock before the doors are installed it may be nothing to worry about.

Typically the rough framing should be about 1.5 to 2 inches oversize to allow for the door casing. The sheetrock is then hung and often the rough cut on the sheetrock appears a bit irregular. That will all be covered later by the door trim.

The real concern is whether the studs are true. You could check the studs with a 3 foot level, if they are true I dont think it will be a problem.

what i was measuring was the moulding between the two doors. The sheetrock and doors have already been installed.

sight unseen it is difficult to be sure, but If the difference is that great on the finished molding edges I would think that one or the other, and perhaps both of the door frames is out of alignment.

I would suggest you bring this to the attention of your GC and have it checked out.
