  • mismatched mortar

we have contracted a general contractor out of lorton, VA to push our house out 12feet. they were to salvage enough existing brick to use on the front of the house that faces the street, the sides and back are siding.

    FINE.

But the masons used regular grey mortar and it doesn't match the yellowish mortar on the existing and that is prevalent to our entire ancient subdivision.

afterall, early on and on about the 3 or fourth row of bricks my wife came out and told them that the mortar wasn't going to match; they should have used yellow sand and they said it was still wet and would lighten up in a few weeks-it hasn't after 8 weeks.

it really looks different from the rest of the house, uh, neighborhood.

since there is about 2" of space between this front redbrick and the block behind it would this be a terrible undertaking to include this in the final punch list and tear it off and use matched mortar?
It\'s sometimes better to be lucky than smart.

        HI,
REGARDING YOUR MORTAR COLOR PROBLEM, YOU MAY HAVE THE MASON ACID WASH THE NEW WORK, I FIND THAT OFTEN TIMES WE ARE TRYING TO MATCH MORTAR JOINTS THAT HAVE BEEN WEATHERED. IN MY EXPERIENCE THE GREY COLOR WHICH IS PREVELENT W/ MOST NEW WORK THAT HAS NOT BEEN COLORED WILL FADE AND THE YELLOW COLOR YOU TALK ABOUT OFTEN COMES FROM THE SAND. AS THE MORTAR BREAKS DOWN THE SAND COLOR SHOWS THRU, ACID WASHING CAN BREEAK DOWN THE GREY MORTAR AND ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. THE ONLY OTHER OPTION WOULD BE TO TEAR IT DOWN AND MATCH THE MORTAR WITH SAMPLES THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS SHADES. BUT TRY THE ACISD WASH FIRST, GOOD LUCK. ART CAPRIOTTI
