Have a GE GTS18KBM fridge (about 10 yrs old) that runs well but just started to make a loud humming noise (sounds like it's coming from the freezer) when the fan (?) or whatever else can hum, is running. Serious? Or just an annoyance? Is there an easy, inexpensive fix? Thanks!

: Have a GE GTS18KBM
That model number is incomplete. Did you get it right off the appliance's model and serial number tag?

: is running.
It could be a problem with the fan motor (see the link below). It is a common failure point.

: Is this serious or just an annoyance?
If the motor bearing are responsible, the motor will probably fail eventually and may result in food loss. If left operating for a long time with a failed motor more serious damage can occur. You should probably consider replacing it sooner rather than later.

You're lucky, yours looks to be an older design where just replacing the motor may be necessary. On newer designs that have an electronic control, that control can be responsible for fan motor noises which can be expensive to replace. Just replacing the motor is usually fairly simple.
