For the past several months, our 3 yr old GE (bottom freezer) refrigerator has been making sounds like a car motor changing speeds... You will notice a sound like a motor running (humming) at a certain RPM then it will slow down and settle at another RPM then it might speed back up or it might stop. After a period of time the process repeats itself. It is always very noticeable. All internal refer / freezer temperatures are OK... Ideas please??

Model Number

GE fridge
the condenser fan motor is almost always a sealed unit, but it uses sleeve bearings. the evaporator/freezer fan motor is an open type fractional horsepower unit with sleeve bearings and fiber spacers. both are porous sintered bronze bearings commonly called OIL-LITE bearings. some bearings are mounted in a self aligning bracket some are fixed so they don't move. almost all use a felt to retain the oil.
most fractional hp motor armatures have some end play as they seek their magnetic centers when rotating. too much end play the fan can hit something inside.

Electronic control failure?

On many of those models a failure of the fridge's 'mother board' (mounted on the back of the cabinet) causes the evaporator motor to change speeds erratically and/or power multiple speeds at the same time resulting in what many people describe as a 'howling' sound.
Usually the only way to correct those conditions is to replace the electronic circuit board.
