    Problem with my fridge

    Hi,

I tried cleaning my fridge yesterday. The freezer section was a mess with loads of ice. I tried breaking the ice with a knife and unfortunately there was some gas started leaking out of the freezer. I think I have broken some kind of gas tube by poking on the wrong place. I have switched off my fridge now. However I would like to know if it will b safe to switch on my fridge until an electrician arrives.

    Regards,

    Anand.

You dont want to call and electrician, you need a refrigeration technician....sounds like a problem with the defrost system,,but if you poked it with a knife and gas came out, most likely you punctured a refrigeraton coil. which can be a very costly repair.

AS the last person said - you probably put a hole in the evaporator tubing underneath. If this is aluminum yu may get by - by an epoxy repair made just for aluminum otherwise you're looking at replacing the whole evaporator. The other great expense is the refrigerant which if its r-12 is gonna cost!

If the water is coming from the bottom of the frig check under it to see if it is coming from the drain pan or is it coming from the floor of the frig and leaking on the floor. You could have a clogged drain in the freezer that is leaking into the frig. If so you may have some work taking it apart but it is a cheap fix. Usually inside the frig is a defrost timer located by the temp controls, turn it till it clicks the heaters on and see if it leaks.
            Good Luck!
