i just recently installed a kenmore 1/2 hp disposal...it is the exact one that i took out...its a basic job and was really easy to do but here is my problem...as of thurs it started to smoke and burn kinda like it is burned out...terrible burnt rubber smell and smoke came from bottom of it...i connected the wires the exact same way...kinda basic white to white black to black and then i connected the ground around the screw where the other ground was at...now my old g.d. work for 5 years with the same connection and hookup to the switch and never had this problem...also last night when i turned the switch on i seen a small spark coming from the switch...what could my problem be...can it be i just got a bad disposal or did i do something wrong...please help ...thanks steve

It appears that you have your wiring correct, and given that the malfunction was not a result of a jam or other condition that would cause an overload, and further considering that the problem started almost immediately after installation, I would suspect their is a manufacturing defect in the unit.
No doubt the spark you saw at the wall switch resulted from an overload condition on the motor.
The good news is, the unit is still new so their should be a warranty period to replace it.

[well i did take the g.d off to check the wiring and all was correct and what i found out was.....when i unhooked it there was mechanical pieces broke off inside the disposal...it sounded like marbles in a jar...so there was obviously something wrong...i took it back and got a new one and that was is working the way it should
