  • Aluminum Wires

    Hi,..I want to replace a light switch. The hardware store has switchs with aluminum wires; and others without. How do I tell if I have aluminum wires..Thanks, Carol

    When was your house built? Generally houses that were built or had wiring done between 1965 to 1978 are suspect for aluminum. What color is the wires that you would connect your new switch to?

      Hi..This house was built in the 60's(I've been here for 26 yrs)There's three black wires, and one white one. I guess It's aliminum..Is that bad??..Thanks..Carol

        Copper wires are "copper" colored. Aluminum wires are a "silver" color. Both types can be coated in either a black or white plastic.

          if you are not sure, buy a switch thatis rated for both AL and CU. (aluminum and copper)
