i am installing an electric stove where our gas stove was and am wondering which wire to use. i am hoping 8-3 is ok. it's an older stove and the wire doesn't have to go through the walls but it's in conduit in the crawl space under the house. also the plug i installed said that the white wire goes in a special spot but all the other wires just go in the side terminals. should i put the copper wire with the black one or the red one?

plus the wire only goes about 15 feet, if that matters -
In all cases the bare copper wire should be attached to a green grounding screw, never to a power terminal.
The white wire goes to a circuit common terminal.
The Red and Black wires are the powered conductors.Comment

there is no green screw. i looked all over for some place for the ground and there is none.Comment

actually now that i looked at the box that came with the plug it says it's a non-grounding unit so what do i do with the ground wire?

The new code says that any dryer receptacle and range receptacle be wired with a four wire pigtail and receptacle. Go out and buy a four wire pigtail Black, Red, White, Green. Get a matching 50 amp receptacle which has four openings in the faceplate. Inside the terminals are marked as to which goes where. The pigtail end that goes to the range - Black to Black, Red to Red, Neutral goes to the center (white) If there's a green ground wire on it remove it and ground it on the stove frame, the green ground from the pigtail fasten it to the same place on the frame ground.Comment

The wire size should be 6/3 plus ground for a 50 amp breaker for a range. This document will show you how to install the circuit. It describes a dryer connection but it's the same for a range.
