I have installed some Progress Lighting (Type IC) cannister lights in a new construction and find that some of them go off and then come on intermittently. We have resecured the connections to make quite sure they were not arcing. It appears that when some of them get hot they turn off and then when they cool down they come on again. This is only in 1 room. I currently have 60W light bulbs installed.

IC rated can lights have a thermal protector switch inside that turns off the power to the light if it becomes too hot. Then like you're experiancing, resets it'self once it cools down. The can is rated for the max wattage allowed, but so is the trim piece. If you're within the required wattage limits then you may have a faulty thermal protector. They can usually be replaced to see if that solves the problem. But you may be overlamping the can so the switch is doing the job it was intended for. Look on the inside manuf nameplate to see what the max rating of lamp you are allowed to use.Last edited by kactuskid; 04-01-2006, 01:09 AM.
