I want to replace a standard incandescent ceiling fixture with a new halogen type. The existing fixture is on a circuit with a dimmer switch. Will the new halogen fixture work on this circuit?

If the new fixture operates on line voltage(120VAC) you'll be fine with a dimmer in the circuit. Some low voltage halogens(which use a transformer to step the line voltage down to 12 volts) have dimmable transformers, others do not. Check the documentation that came with the fixture if you're using low voltage lighting. -
As stated if the halogen bulb is 120 volt dimming should not be a problem but if the 120 is on a transformer down to 24 or 18 volts, transformer primaries don't like under voltages. lower voltages or chopped AC doesn't sit too good with a transformer.Comment
