I have an outdoor air conditioning unit Carrier 2.5 tons that uses R22 that is 20 years old. I have not used it because it does not blow cold air. how much would this cost to refill with freon in CA? is this the right size for a 2 story home 2,000 sq feet? is it worth to replace and how much would this cost?

Hi there,
R22 is no longer being produced, so refilling it has become very expensive. A 2.5 ton unit might also be a bit small for a two-story 2,000 square foot home. Most homes that size usually need around 3 to 4 tons, depending on insulation, windows, and climate. Since the unit isn’t cooling and it's already 20 years old, replacing it is probably the smarter move.
Based on online estimates, the cost to refill R22 can range from around 700 to 2,000 dollars, depending on how much is needed and local labor rates. For a full system replacement in California, the cost can range from 7,000 to 10,000 dollars or more, depending on the type of system, efficiency rating, and whether any ductwork or extra upgrades are required.
Hope that helps!
