Simple HVAC Question

Hi,

I just bought a house which has an HVAC system and Im pretty unfamiliar with it, although I understand the concept.

My question is, what mode should I be setting on the HVAC itself, when I bought the house they had it set to Auto/Off. I dont have a controller for the HVAC other than on the unit itself, the only other thing that I think runs it is the humidity sensor, so I dont know what's "auto" about it. Should I be running it perhaps on "low" the entire time?

One switch is heat, off, and cool. If you want heat then turn it to heat and set temp where you want it, The other switch is for the fan, on, fan will run all the time. Auto, fan runs only when calling for heat or cool. Paul
