  • Replace Fan Motor on compressor unit

Do you have to discharge the capacitor, when changing out the Fan motor and hooking up the wires.

I will be replacing with the same motor: AO SMITH F48J66A48-48 FRAME MOTOR

the capacitor is connected to the start windings through a centrifugal switch inside the motor end bell. no, you don't have to discharge the capacitor unless you are going to use it over with the new motor. use a well insulated screwdriver to discharge it - common terminal to the cap side, both if its a dual capacitor.

Do I need to replace the Capacitor (5MFD), when replacing the Fan motor. I replaced it about (2) years ago.

In reference to changing out the Fan motor and hooking up the wires, you do not have to discharge the Capacitor, other than turning off the power.

You don't have to discharge the capacitor you can simply shut all power sources off. But please make sure there is absolutely no power going to the device before switching motors otherwise you may be in need of more than a heating repair.
