The boiler code requires a low water cutoff, without it you could do serious damage to a boiler, and risk an explosion if any other safety relief system did not function to its required capacity.

The reason I ask is that here in Alaska I have never seen a LWCO on a home boiler. Most of the install packages state "Optional". I did see one installed the other day, but the wiring was not connected. This whole installation was a mess anyway and needs so much work to make it right, even though it is only 6 months old. I did see some of the code for NH and VT that do require LWCO for any hot water boiler. My boiler mentor is off hunting so I can't get his point. Thanks, Tom
Local codes take precedence and generally follow industry, and national standards, but not always the case, a low water cutoff will allow a boiler to survive a draining incident.
