  • Redoing basement - Heating question

I live in the NorthEast.I plan on finishing my unfinished basement. Can anyone give me some advice on what would be the most efficient way to heat the basemant area. It will be an open floor plan, except for the media room which will be enclosed. I have heating ducts running along the ceiling. I will also be able to tap into the duct for the enclosed room. The furnace that I have will be able to provide heat to the basement without taxing the heat to the rest of the house. I was just thinking about cutting two vents in the duct in the open area and one in the enclosed room. How does this sound? should I extend the ducts down to the floor or does someone else have another suggestion?

Pjalst; It will be best if you can take the supply runs down low to nearly the floor(just above baseboard) level. This way the heat will arrive near the level where YOU are sitting ,rather than at a high (ceiling) level. Dont forget to install some Return air intakes, as you can only put air in when its taken out. As you have given no room size or construction info (insulation, windows, type of flooring, Main duct size, etc, its difficult to give you any sizes of runs and quantity. Post back with more info and we will advise further ..Hube

As all of basements here are all finished. We have found the best way to heat and cool them has been to take the runs to the outside walls. Cut a takeoff in the top of the duct and run 6" pipe to a 2 1/4"X 12" 90o boot 12" in from the outside wall blowing down. This way the warm air has to come back to a return down near the floor by the furnace or heatpump.
