what causes this? central air unit cools fine and then the floor gets real cold and then the unit gets iced over and then stops cooling?.

Low freon would be my first guess because of a leak. Next would be the high pressure to low pressure orifice is clogged and frozen over. If there's a TEV (Thermal Expansion Valve) it could be pulsating open - closed. The bulb that drives it could have shifted position. It's supposed to be on the bottom of the suction line. It contains the same refrigerant as it is used for. Inadequate refrigeration oil could be a problem as it's supposed to circulate with the freon.

Blower clean and running, filter clean, coil clean. Then low on freon, ice or frost on the lines. Call a hvac tech to check the freon . Have him check for a leak. He could put in a little Dytel freon now This way if you have a leak it will show up red if he has to come back.
