  • Hurricane Francis and now no air conditioning HELP

We just suffered through Hurricane Francis and made it through with minimal damage but my central air is not working!!!!!!! We lost power several times during the storm. We have flipped the breakers on and off but nothing at all happens. No fan no condenser--- nothing! All you can hear is a clicking like it is trying to come on. Any help would be greatly appreciated since it may be weeks until I can get a contractor to come out and it is HOT HERE!!!!!

Glad to here you weathered the storm OK. I weathered a couple hurricanes in Pennsacola so i fully understand your situation.

    A couple quick questions.

    1. Are you sure you have 250volt power? Sounds silly but 250 volt power requires two 125 volt lines coming into the house, sometimes after hurricanes you have one or the other but not both. If it is a power issue you will have some lighting circuits throughout the house that arent working also. If that is the case all you can do is be patient, the power crews will fix it but it may take some time as they have their nands full at the moment.

    2. When you turn the unit on at the Thermostat, does the inside blower motor come on?

    3. If the inside blower comes on but nothing happening at the condensing unit you will need someone with a Volt/OHM/Milliammeter (VOM) and fairly familiar with tracing an electrical circuit.

I would also suggest a single probe voltage tester to check for the presence of voltage before touching the unit. The unit has been through a storm and the condition is unknown, therefore, for safety, check to make sure there is no voltage on the metal cabinet before touching it.

Next, Please read my post under "troubleshooting central air" for a complete step by step on troubleshooting your condensing unit. You could print that post for a step by step checklist as you go.

You dont say where your at down here. Im by westPalm. I hope you turned the breakers to the unit off before it hit here. It,s hard on the units when you start and stop them and at the same time a brown out comes along. With FPL here you want a time delay on the compressor to stop that. Sounds like you should Ohm out the compressor for one thing. with the power off you might look inside it and see if the Cap looks ok and all wires or on every thing Glad you have power. Daughter's power is still out and phone also. we had power off for 2 days is all phone was down for 4 day time.lost 8 trees
