  • installing window unit in a garage

i want to install a window unit into a 1 car garage. only problem is that there aren't any windows in the garage. besides the obvious of creating a window or a hole in the wall are there any other possibilities. im assuming i can't just build a stand for the unit due to ventilation problems.does the unit have to hang outside to guard against harmful fumes of some sort.there is very little ventilation to begin with. could i place it near the garage door and just open it slightly positioning the unit under the door and build something to cover the rest of the length and width caused by the raising of the garage door?.and when im done using it just turn off a/c ,pull it back inside, and close the garage door?are there kits out there already for this type of garage door application? im sorry but knocking out a brick wall to install the unit is just not possible.besides im only renting so i doubt the owners would appreciate that.do i have any options at all or am i just S**T OUT OF LUCK.thanks for any tips or opinions.

You can put it under the door there.Just make sure the side vents for air to come into it are not covered up at all. Its not fumes, it need's, its air to help cool down the compressor. Id just cut some 1/4" plywood to fit the sides under the door

Why are you set on a window unit? It seems that a split unit would be much easier to deal with in the long run. After installation you would never have to fuss with it except for regular maint.

I already have the window unit and would just like to make use of it somewhere. What do you mean by split unit? Are you suggesting splitting off of the central a/c? Please explain,i'm not exactly sure what your idea is. Sorry --- D.

A split unit is any air conditioner inwhich the condenser is in one cabinet and the evaporator is in another which is the basic concept of central air units,

however they do make some small split units that are intended to serve one room in the same manner as a window air unit.

A package unit is any air conditioner inwhich all the components are in a common cabinet and they share one fan motor. Examples of package units would be window air conditioners, through the wall type. or the larger self contained central air units such as used on mobile homes.

on the link click on ductless split systems http://www.hvacdistribution.com/ azure, here is a picture of a typical split unit. they come as small as 9000 btu. The part with the fan sits on the outside of the wall and the other part is mounted on the wall inside. It only needs a one inch hole in the wall for the piping and the electrical to run through. I understand that you already have a "window shaker" and you want to use it. I thought that I would show you an alternative that would be easy. Good luck.
