  • Cost of Central AirConditioning - No Duct System

The next issue about our home HVAC is the fact that we don't have central air-conditioning (there are not airducts). We live near the lake and usually get a good breeze off the lake in the evening, unfortunately during the day we roast like chickens unless we run window units that were provided as part of the sale or the monstrous floor unit that we purchased to squelch my husbands complaints about the living room (the new window(s) don't facilitate a window unit...too big).

I've heard a little about a flexible ducting system that could be run so that we could get central A/C, but this is way past my realm of comprehension. What does this entail? cost? Are there any other options for us as far as central a/c is concerned? Would we have to scrap the current boiler heating system to do this?

Our home is a 2 story (bedrooms upstairs w/ closet access attic (which needs a floor put down incidently)with a basement which stays pretty cool year round.

Not sure just what you have there. But with a basement you can put a furnace and AC in with new duct work for the runs. Even for the top floor. You dont say how big or sq ft here .If large one unit for down and another up in the attic for the top floor would work out real good for you.

      Thanks imeduc,
      The house is 1700sq.ft, 4bdrms/2bth Up, LR,DN,KIT,FAM & 1/2Bath DWN. I don't know the Sq.Ft. of the Basement; it wasn't included in the 1700.

I guess I would have to put a floor in the attic in order to get someone up there to cut the holes in the room ceilings to route the ducts. Probably the same for the basement too. I'm concerned with how much tearing up will be done and of course the cost.

Does anyone know anyone who works for food? I'm a great cook...lol

Cant say what cost is there. dont need a floor in attic .Just where unit will be. get 3 bids on the job for sure.

where I live a majority of the houses are made of concrete. Normally cinder block. What they do here is place ductless split units in every room they want to cool.It only requires a one inch hole in each wall that the unit is installed in (for the piping and the electrical). You can't get typhoon/hurricane insurance in our area with window units installed, that's another reason for the split unit.
