programmable thermostat

Want to replace the cheap thermostat in a recently purchased home. Bought a ritetemp model 8030.

Wiring has White, Yellow, Green and Red. New thermo has posts for W, Y, G, but has an RC and a RH. I think those are Red-Cold and Red-Hot, but what the heck do I know?

Also, RC and RH are jumpered in the new thermo.

Erik,

T-stats are tricky because of the number of different brands.
I think RC/RH will be your common (conductor wire from equipment
to t-stat). To be sure open the access door on your furnace/air
handler and check the wiring diagram to make sure red is being
used as the common. Read the wiring instructions with the t-stat
also to determine the wiring route from equipment to t-stat. Hope
this helps.

I'm having the same problem as you. Except my wiring has the C wire. But I only have 1 red wire coming out of the wall.

Where do I hook it up on the rite temp? RC or RH? Should I leave RC and RH jumpered? I tried it on RC and smelled smoke after an hour.

Depending on the heating/cooling unit you have would depend on the wiring of the particular Thermostat..

Check this site for the Manufactures wiring, It should explain things more clearly for you.
