  • Re- - zoning heating system

Presently I have a four zone hot water base board heat sytem. During the night we'd like to have the upstairs bath kept warm, but the downstairs need not be. THis is true of several other rooms in the house. The day/night useage is one part of it, but so too is the solar. One side of the house gets a bit warmer than the other. I'd like to control each room individually. Here's what I'm thinkin'....put a by-pass on the goes-into and goes-outa for each room and at the goes-into part install a solenoid contolled 'y' type ('t' type) valve with it's own thermostat located on a wall appropriate for that room. That valve, of coarse would have to be wired in similar to the existing zone valves/thermostats. Can this be done?

The system you are describing is quite similar to the loop systems that are commonly used in large buildings such as schools or hotel/motels.

Basically the systems have a supply line from the boiler to the far end of the building, then it has a return line back to the boiler which creates a loop.

Each respective room can then have a thermostic controlled tap off the supply line to supply on demand heat to that area and the downstream end of the radiator is plumbed into the return loop. In this manner you can effect different temperature settings in indivdual rooms.

Thanks for the reply, LazyPup. That gives me the incentive. Will start reasearching valves and such for that project.
