  • goodman ac blow fuses

Anytime I connect the fan relay wire on the thermostat side, it blows the fuse on the furnace control board.

First off, are you certain the fuses are the correct amp rating?

Next, examine the blown fuse carefully. If the fusible link appears to have a nice clean break it is indicating an overload. If the fuse shows signs of blackening and there are little beads of melted metal visible it is indicating a direct short.

Why was the fan wire disconnected? If it was disconnected to perform service to another component, go back and double check all wiring to insure it is all hooked up correctly.

Check all service access covers that may have been opened carefully to see if a wire inadvertantly got caught and pinched causing a short to ground.

If the fan relay was changed, check the terminal configuration very carefully. Often they may have the same number of connectors and even in the same configuration, but the terminals may be different functions from one relay to another. You must always check the wiring schematic on the side of the relay itself. This is very important with fan relays because if you happen to get wires on the wrong terminals you could be feeding the line voltage directly to the low voltage control section.

One of the best ways to fix this problem is first of all get rid of the goodman equip if at all possible.

If that is not an option, pull new stat wire from the stat to the unit. I have seen alot of stat wires that have been attacked by vermin causing them to short together.

If what Lazypup has advised doesn't work pull the wire.
