  • Outside Fan cycles on and off

Hi everyone! Just found this website. Awsome!

I just finished doing a "search", and I think I've found the answer to my question. However, I would like to ask again for peace of mind.

The fan on the outside unit cycles on and off while the compressor continues to run. The fan will run for several minutes and shut off for several minutes. When the fan shuts off I can hear a fairly loud hissing noise, kinda like air blowing out of a pipe. I've also noticed that the fan has excessive vibration. Not extreme vibration, but more than normal.

I will probably replace the motor.

My questions are: Why is the motor cycling on and off? Is the capacitor defective or is it the motor only? What is the hissing noise? Is that something to be concerned about or will that stop when the fan motor is replaced?

    Thanks for your help!!!!

Dont let the outside unit run at all with the fan doing this on and off. The head pressure will get to high.

Sounds like the motor is overheating and shutting down till it cools down. Replace both the motor and the capacitor and it should be fine. As imeduc said it would be wise to turn it off completely until you replace the motor, other wise you will do serious damage to the compre$$or.
