fan will not turn

Thanks for the help, found the way to light the pilot light and it works, however the fan will not turn on.

How old is the furnace? Most of the newer furnaces have a spark ignition or glow plug ignition. If this is the case all you have to do is turn the unit to heat. If you actually do have a pilot, find the gas valve, on the top should be either a nob or switch, turn this to pilot. Once in the pilot position you will have to hold down the switch and take a long lighter and find the actual pilot assembly and light while still holding down the switch. Continue holding down the switch for about 1 minute (could be longer). After a minute, release the switch and the pilot should stay lit, if it doesn't, try again and hold down the switch for 2 minutes. If it still does not stay lit, call a service tech.

By the way, the easiest way to find the pilot assembly is to follow the small silver tube coming out of the gas valve, where it ends will be your assembly

Right at where the pilot flame comes out there is some sort of flame detector. It might be a small cappillary tube that feeds back to the main valve or a millivolt generator that also feeds back to the main valve. It might also be called a flamerod that operates by resistance or a change in resistance to keep the pilot lit and aid in opening the main valve. The flamerod usually goes through some electronic amplifier to operate the main valve.
