My furnace is about seven years old. The funace operates for several minutes and shuts down. The service people are rather sure that I have a crack in the housing of the four tubes that results in a pressure buildup in one of the tubes which causes the flame to extend out of the tube to a sensor. This sensor gets hot and shuts the unit down. When this occurs I am told the entire unit must be replaced. Currently we have taken the unit out of service to prevent a hazard with carbon monoxide in the house. Is it economical to repair the unit or should it be replaced?

With the furnace just seven years old, I would find out if the heat exchanger (the part that they are saying is cracked) is still in warranty. What type of furnace is it? Most larger manufactures (carrier, trane, etc...) have a ten to twenty year warranty on the exchange.
