gas question

Hi all, new member here. I have couple quick questions. I live in Western Pa in a small town that has it's own gas co. and my bills are intollerable ($600. a mo. in the winter) so we are going all electric. New electric furnace and hot water tank. We are going to try this ourselves, my husband is very handy but I am wondering about the disconnecting the gas heater, and tank. Is this a fairly easy project or should we just pay someone to do it?

Disconnecting your existing heater or water tank is very easy, both should have shut off valves on the gas line very near the gas line's entrance to the units. Turn this shut off valve to the off position (usually the valve will be at 90 degrees to the pipe) after you have done this then remove the gas lines from the respective units, remove any unwanted piping. At this point you want to make sure you leave on or get a small 4" piece of black pipe and install a "cap" on the end (use pipe dope on the threads) valves will leak small amounts of gas so it is very VERY important to cap the end of the gas line with a cap.

If you haven't done this yet,cut the gas off at the tank first for safety and disconnect it from the lines, then disconnect and plug the appliance lines.
