Have always had central air. The house we bought the central air was installed in 1991. It works but not very good. My house is a ranch with 995 sq ft. I really don't want to spend the money to buy a new central unit when I could get by with a window unit. I have a 5,000 btu window unit that I can put in the bedroom. I would like to install one in the living room. It measures 21ft x 11ft. I'm thinking a 10-15,000 btu should do the job. My question is are the newer window units quieter than the older models? I've read where the newer window units also run more cheaply. What are your thoughts on the window units? Thanks!

all new units strive to be energy efficient more than they were, say, 30 years ago when energy was cheap. now you got to buy with an eye open for the best buy. the refrigerant changed from r-22 and r-12 to r-134a which is more environmental friendly. 22 & 12 both had boiling points way lower than 134a.

Here is an easy law of physics
One ton of air conditioning =12,000btu/hr,
One ton of air conditioning also = 1HP of mechanical energy
and
One horsepower of mechanical energy = 746watts of electrical energy
746watts of electrical energy = 746/1000 of a Kilowatt
