  • New Ao Smith Motor

I am replacing an old AO Smith motor with 3 wires with the same brand motorand same specs but with 4 wires. and a new capacitor with 2 leads versus the old one that have 3 leads.
old motor wirings are brown, purple and black . the new wiring are black, yellow ,brown and white-brown.
I will appreciate any suggestions on how to do it.

If this is a replacement motor for your outside a/c unit, the 2 brown wires go to your new capacitor the other two leads go to the contactor.

It's like hvacwiz said. The two brown wires are capacitor leads. The black and yellow connect to the load side of the contactor.

This brown white can be cut and taped off if necessary. It is an auxillary power feed to the capacitor.

If your unit has a dual rated capacitor you may not need the brown/white lead. It's redundant.
