    the new addition to the basement added 3 supplies at the far end of the basement. there never existed a return before.....so one has to appear..............i have the option as homeowner against professional/judgement as to where we want the return to go....LOW OR HIGH......j-manual not definitive.[xx(]

    Most certainly have Return air grilles in a Useable BASEMENT. Install them as LOW to the floor level as possible. In most case, a well designed duct layout will have 50 % of the TOTAL R/A taken from the basement level. (This allows for a warmer and better circulation of air)in this basement area. For every 10 x 4 - (4- or 5" round pipe) supply register that is in the basement, allow approx 30 sq. inches of return (free area)...ie: 6 x 10 grille, for each supply. Try to locate them in OPPOSITE locations to the supply. If you need more info, feel free to ask. Hube
