  • Best Garage Door Insulation Options?

    Hey everyone,

I’m looking for advice on insulating my garage door. I live in a region with pretty extreme temperatures (hot summers, cold winters), and my garage gets uncomfortable during both seasons. I want to keep the temperature more stable without breaking the bank.

What’s the best type of insulation for a garage door – foam board, reflective insulation, or fiberglass? Is it worth the effort to DIY, or should I hire a professional? Also, how effective has it been for anyone who's done this?

Any recommendations or tips are appreciated!

Hi! Insulating your garage door can make a huge difference in stabilizing the temperature, especially in extreme climates. Foam board, reflective insulation, and fiberglass each have their pros and cons. Foam board insulation is popular because it’s rigid, easy to cut, and provides good insulation without adding too much weight to the door. It's also relatively inexpensive and can be installed by cutting pieces to fit each panel of the garage door. Reflective insulation is a great option if your garage tends to get really hot, as it reflects heat away. It’s lightweight and easy to handle but may not provide as much insulation against cold. Fiberglass insulation offers excellent overall insulation, but it can be bulkier and may require more effort to install since it needs to be secured properly to avoid sagging.

As for DIY vs. hiring a professional, it depends on your comfort level. DIY can definitely save you money, and many kits come with clear instructions. However, make sure you take time to seal the edges properly to avoid air leaks. Hiring a pro can ensure that it’s done efficiently and thoroughly, especially if you're unsure about handling the insulation materials or have a more complicated garage door setup.

From those who have done it, the feedback is generally positive—insulated garage doors help keep temperatures more manageable, reduce noise, and might even lower energy bills if your garage is attached to your home. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, foam board or reflective insulation could be a good start. Have you already looked into the specific type of garage door you have and whether it might affect the installation?

    Thanks!
