noisy Heat Pump

My unit for the heat pump outside is making this loud noise like a hammering noise. Can anyone tell me what this is??????

I have a heat pump also and when mine started to get loud the compressor failed.(expensive) Is your unit very old?
Have somebody take a look at so they can maybe remedy it before its too late.

Thank you for the info. I am a procrastinator, there is always something that wants to separate me from my money.I had a feeling the loud noise wasnt a good thing. I am just wondering though what is this metal hitting metal sound.

Is the noise coming from the indoor unit or the outdoor unit? Is it continuous or just on start-up/shut-down?
