  • New problem with 422

I reassembled the heater with proper gaskets and checked the air manifold, fuel supply. The unit goes through the purge cycle, burner lights come on,i see flash of ignition.runs for a minute or so, gets hot and then burner lights go out. Room circulating fan never comes on but the combustion fan remains on. After a few minutes the burner lights all start flashing. I just noticed that after the burner lights go out if i wiggle the flame rod a little up and down the burner lights momentarily come on showing 4 burners. The wire on the flame rod has a deterorated shrink tube covering. Is it possible that it is bad and can it be tested. It is supposed to start getting really cold here in northern new york.help--thanks,tom

    M22, 422 flame rod

Tom, What is going on there is the flame rod is touching the burner pot or ring. The 22, 422 flame rod has an angled portion at the bottom as well as an angle to the rod itself. Many times the rod gets bent and is not at the correct angle. You can do one of two things. Remove the big window plate and bend the rod so that it does not touch the pot or ring. The other thing you can do is cut off the bottom ¼ inch of the rod. This will bring the rod up higher than the burner ring. If you have seen most any vented heater you will notice the flame rod does not stick so far down in the pot as the M21, 422.If you do cut off the tip you should also be sure the rod is not bent so bad that it touches the pot or ring. That last ¼ inch will not cause any trouble with the stove. Tom
