  • black iron union

When reassembling a black iron union on a water heater, do you use any pipe dope or oil on the two mating surfaces of the ground joint union or do you reassemble it dry.

why would you use a black iron union on a water line in the first place?
    usually its a dielectric union.
the mating surfaces of a union is machined so it seals dry - no compound on the joint.
the threads mating the union to the external piping uses a joint compound only.

still doesn't change anything. no dope on the mating surfaces. one end has a ground bevel the other has a brass seat.
