Another question, what is the distance between the top of the gas water heater and combustables.

I am relocating water heater and there is a cabinet above where i plan on setting the heater. it is a standard 30 gallon.

waterheater is not installed at this time. just need to know if i need to modify the cabinet.

It would depend upon the finished height of the flue. The codes require the flue to be a minimum of 6" from combustables. (International Residential code 2427.7.7 & Uniform Plumbing Code 516.4)

let me see if i understand- the cabinet is wood, so i would have to have a 6 inch square or circle cut out around the doublewall pipe.

The clearance for singlewall is 6" minimum and it may not pass though a floor, ceiling or wall.

The clearance for type B or BW (double wall) is per Mfg. Listing (1" typical" International Residential Code 2427.6.1 & Uniform Plumbing code 815.3.2.6)

Also check your local fire codes. In my jurisdiction type B & BW may not pass through a closet, cabinet or storage shelf where there is the potential that combustibles could be stored within the minimum clearance.
