  • Removing a tub

Exactly what is the best method for removing a one piece shower/tub unit? It is a fiberglass unit. I am wanting to take out the combo unit and put in a jet tub. Is the best way to just bust it up to get back into the plumbing fixtures?

Before you begin taking the tub/enclosure out first remove the tub spout, shower mixer handles and trim escutcheons, overflow cover and mounting bracket, and the tub drain basket. (If the shower arm is extending through the fiberglass it should be removed as well.)

I am attaching a couple illustrations to show you how the handles and trim escuteheons are attach.

For ease of removal the fiberglass can easily be cut into managable pieces with a sawzall or a jig saw. Just be careful to insure the blade is positoined to cut the fiberglass only, and not the backerboard, studding, pluming pipes or electrical cables that may be in the wall behind it.
