Should I install the whole house water filter before or after the water softener unit? I'm assuming before, so that the water softener unit will work more officiant, is this correct[?]

I would definitely install the whole house filter before a water treatment system otherwise a major portion of the sediments that should be caught in the filter would end up in your water treatment system and could cause problems with the treatment systems components, however, you may want to tee off a line for your outside hose bibbs and lawn irrigation system so you are not treating the water used for irrigation, car washing or general outdoor utility purposes. -
