ok...we decided to change our 2 knob shower (separate hot/cold knobs) into a more modern lever style. The new lever has the hot/cold copper pipes coming in at the sides (west/east) inside the drywall. Is this difficult to change from the separate system we have now? We are quite intimidated by plumbing so any tips would be very helpful.

The water lines connect to the single lever mixers in the same manner as the twin handle style. You will problably need to make some minor changes due to the differences in physical size of the two units but it should not be difficult at all.

Your existing unit is probably also a manifold with inlets for hot and cold. Replacing it will require access inside the wall, possibly from the other side to avoid tile repair. There are trim plates available to cover the extra holes where your H and C are now.
