  • connecting a washing machine drain pan to drain pipe

I am looking for a detailed drawing of how to connect a washing machine drain pan to the drain pipe. The pan will be located next to the wet wall in which the tub drain waste pipe will be. We are installing a new bath/laundry on a second floor, which is exactly above our 1st floor bathroom. All appliances - except for a proposed washer/dryer unit - are exactly above their 1st floor counterparts (sink above sink, toilet above toilet, bath above bath, etc.). To insure against leaks from the washing machine, we have purchased a drain pan to go under it. However, it did not come with any instructions. Where and how do we connect a pipe from this pan so it will drain away any water from washing machine leaks or overflows?

Typically the drain pans are not connected to the house DWV (Drain,Waste & Vent) system. They are only intended to catch the occassional drip and are not intended to be an auxillary drain fixture. Some jurisdictions will permit them to be equipped with a drain line that runs outside the structure in the same manner as an HVAC condensate drain or a water heater drain pan.

While the drain pans such as you describe are considered to be a non-permant fixture, in some jurisdictions it is now a code requirement that when laundry fixtures are installed on upper floors or on floors that could be damaged by water the floor must be built in the same manner as a shower pan with a floor drain. In this case the drain would be required to be connected to a P-trap then it can be plumbed into the DWV system in the conventional manner.
