Please help with a kitchen sink problem. One of the under sink joints just came disconnected. (see pic) It seems like an easy repair, but could someone recommend a glue or compound for this and perhaps a procedure for reattaching it? I am new to this and want to do it right. Thanks.

The joint you have illustrated in the picture is a 'Slip Joint" and is intended to hold together by friction fit alone. There is to be no glue or sealers used on these type of joints.
If you will unscrew the nut on the lower pipe in your picture you will find a small plastic ring compression ferrule under the nut. (Normally they are a translucent white plastic material.)
Examine the compression ferrule closely and you will see that it has a wedge shaped cross section. When you slide the compression ferrule on the end of the tailpiece the thich side of the compression ferrule must be up toward the nut with the thin sharp edge point down toward the joint.
To reconnect the fitting you first slide the nut up on the tailpiece (the upper pipe in the photo) then slide the compression ferrule on the tailpiece and slide it up about 1/2" from the end of the pipe.
Now slip the femal section of the cross tube up on the tailpiece as far as it will go, then while holding the two pipes in place, slide the nut and compression sleeve downwards until you can screw the nut on the threaded section of the cross tube (lower pipe). Screw then nut down tight and your finished.
In the photo it looks like there may be some kind of red glue on the pipe. You will need to clean that off as much as you can before making up the joint. -
