  • Corian / LG Hi-Mac Sink Drain Install

When installing a drain / gargabe disposal fitting in a new Corian / LG sink, is it best to use silicone or plumbers putty to set them? The local retailers don't have the answer.. I am led to believe that plumbers putty will stain the surface of the sink, while the silicone won't last that long. Anyone with experience on thsi issue??

There are new non-petroleum based putties which are safe for stone and solid surfaces. Putty is easier to use than silicone, but properly installed silicone will outlast putty for sure. Even the best putty will eventually dry out, and if the strainer is disturbed, a crack in the putty can occu and leak.

There is an ongoing debate among plumbers on this very issue, and the results are an even split, some preferring one, some the other.

The secret to silicone is to use just enough...too little is not good. And you need to see just a little ooze out, to know you have complete coverage, but if you overdo it, the cleanup is very messy. The best cleanup agent is denatured alcohol. Works great. Use latex gloves, because the alcohol is very harsh on your hands.
