I am installing tile around a tub/shower. We have not set a height for the tile. Can I install concrete backerboard all the way up to the ceiling? Can the backerboard be painted and look smooth or will it have to be floated?

Perhaps this might help you decide how high you want to go with the tile.
The plumbing code says the tile must extend 72" vertical above the finished height of the tub drain.
In a shower enclosure tile must be installed over backerboard.
Backerboard requires a building paper backing on the studs.
Backerboard must be installed with corrosion resistant fasteners.
All backerboard joints must be covered with a water resistant sealant.
Water resistant sheetrock (Greenboard) may be installed on all bathroom walls except within the confines of the shower enclosure up to the 72" above finished drain mark.
Water resistant sheetrock (Greenboard) may not be installed on a ceiling if the framing is greater than 12" on center.
Water resistant sheetrock MAY NOT be installed over a vapor barrier.
Water resistant sheetrock is suitable for adhesive ceramic tile (Not in a shower enclosure).
All joints and fasterner heads must be sealed with a water resistant sealer.
