Load bearing or not?

Load bearer

I presume you did not remove any verticals? Sure doesn't appear to be a load bearing beam. I would think the wall would be more of the load carrier and this was just a means of providing a frame to hang the drywall on. Just my suspicions...

Its not load bearing, the 4x4 is a method of insuring a stable soffit line.

Cut it out carefully as it appears to be continious members of the soffit.
If cracking appears and the member/s are loose you will need to remove more drywall and add nailing.

Load issue....

Clean and neat. Should be a lark from here on to get the lights you want up and running. Sure will open that area up.

Yes, I have the track lighting that will suit the bathroom area-
IT came with these little collasible prongs that go thru the ceiling and then spring open, I'm realizing that once they are thru - that's it- I would have to remove the ceiling. SO I will either have to do it perfectly the first time or figure out how to screw it in securely enough to support the weight of the fixture.
