plastering over vinyl covered sheetrock

I'm wanting to tape and plaster the joints and then spray a textured paint onto the walls to get a knockdown effect. The walls are vinyl-covered sheetrock from the factory (mobile home). Can this be done? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why couldn't this be done? I would make sure you prep the walls pretty good, though. Anyone have experience painting over vinyl?
